My new favorite halvah is from Hebel & Co. It’s handmade in Los Angeles, and it’s delicious!
Scott Hebel grew up eating halvah in Israel, but here in the States where he now lives, he was unable to find any that rivaled what he had as a kid. A few years ago Scott, along with his wife Katie, decided to take a stab at making their own halvah. After much work, and a lot of trial and error, they have succeeded in creating a halvah that has the perfect combination of nuttiness, sweetness, and texture. Adhering to the principles of tradition, and celebrating the incredibly storied history of halvah, Hebel & Co. halvah, “sings of its origins, but is driven by a modern desire for high-quality ingredients.”
Hebel & Co. uses sesame seeds that are single-sourced from Ethiopia and all their halvah is organic, gluten-free, and most are vegan.
For more information, check out the Hebel & Co. website and this article by Amelia Saltsman in The Los Angeles Times.
Besides online, you can purchase Hebel & Co. halvah at the Hollywood Farmer’s Market or Farmshop in Brentwood, California.
