Last week I wrote about The Dorothy Saxe Invitational, a wonderful biennial exhibit at The Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco whereby artists are asked to interpret a Jewish ritual object. For this year’s invitational, the museum asked 38 West Coast artists and contemporary craftspeople to re-imagine the tzedakah box.

All the tzedakah boxes on exhibit will be available for purchase in an ongoing silent auction. If you’re interested, you can get more information and register here.

Today I’m bringing you a roundup of traditional tzedakah boxes. Below are some of my favorites. I chose a variety of boxes in different price ranges. I also included a few more conventional coin banks because I liked their simple and minimal design. The important thing, ultimately, is the gift of giving—not the box.
What is your family tradition of giving tzedakah?
